A chain of Tellian mountains and virgin forests surrounds the wilaya of Souk Ahras, located in the far east of Algeria, bordering the Republic of Tunisia. It is 640 km from the capital and is considered one of the most important border provinces, as it forms Algeria’s eastern frontier with the eastern Arab world and the broader Maghreb region. It is bordered to the northeast by El Tarf Province, to the northwest by Oum El Bouaghi Province, and to the east by Tunisia. Souk Ahras covers an area of 4,360 km², divided into 10 districts and 26 municipalities, with a population of 453,917. The wilaya has basic infrastructure supporting the tourism sector. In addition to its extensive road network, it lies 97 km—approximately an hour and a half—from the international airport and port of Annaba, and is only 40 km from the Tunisian border via Haddada, or 65 km via El Fouidj.
